The Dominican Shrine of St. Jude Thaddeus

Provincial Funds

Point. Click. Give Now. Here’s How!

Gifts to the PROVINCIAL FUNDS, our annual giving program, come from both long-time supporters and friends we have just met. Those who give know they invest in the lives and work of the Central Province. They see the impact on the world their gifts make as they partner with us in our many ministries. In their own way they have listened to and responded to the call of the Gospel to send out preachers, sent to preach to all Nations.

Gifts to any of the PROVINCIAL FUNDS have an immediate impact on the many works of the Dominican friars of the Central Province. You may choose to give an Unrestricted Gift, and this will be directed for use in ministries at the discretion of the Prior Provincial. These have the broadest impact. Or you may choose to give to one of the many other Provincial Funds described below.

Read below of some of the ways you can join us in our work with your financial support.

Gifts To The Dominican Shrine of St. Jude Thaddeus
October 1929 was a time when many in America lost hope. The stock market crashed and so much of what many had worked for was lost. Out went the hope that sustained so many and the faith upon which so much was built. In the midst of these desperate times arose the Dominican Shrine of St. Jude Thaddeus, a testimony to its founder Dominican Fr. William Marchant’s abiding faith in the love and goodness of God even against all odds. This man’s faith drew the attention and prayers of thousands to the Dominican Shrine of St. Jude Thaddeus, set in an alcove of humble St. Pius V Catholic Church in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood. From this grew the popular Novena to St. Jude Thaddeus, a nine-day celebration of prayer seeking the intercession of the Saint of the Hopeless. Today, this Shrine and the five annual novenas to St. Jude ignite hope among thousands from around the globe. Prayer requests arrive daily seeking the intercession of St. Jude on behalf of those who are without employment, whose marriages need healing, whose health is in trouble, who simply want to give thanks for favors granted, and much more. Requests come by phone, in person, in the mail, and through the internet.

Gifts To The Society For Vocational Support (SVS)
The 800 year old work of the Order of Preachers continues today because young men still hear our unique call to preach and to serve. This is a quiet yet powerful call given to each individual. When a man hears his name, his response is firm and long lasting. His is a joyful, lifelong commitment to serve others. The Society for Vocational Support “grows” the future of the Province. Each year dozens of men contact the Vicar for Vocations who personally responds to each inquiry. Whether a young man calls from the steel canyons of Manhattan, the vast deserts of the west, or from an apartment off a college campus, the Vicar for Vocations responds in person, and often. Following up with each candidate, the Vicar begins and sustains a relationship from first inquiry to the doorsteps of the Novitiate. This may take months. It may take years.
  • Gifts to the SVS provide the resources necessary to carry out this essential ministry.
  • Gifts to the SVS offset marketing, printing, communications, and travel costs necessary to effectively “market” this most sacred of vocations.
  • Gifts to the SVS assure young men who hear God’s call to become Dominican friars in the Province of St. Albert the Great will themselves be heard when they ask for information and acceptance.
Gifts To The St. Dominic Mission Society (SDMS)
Nearly 60 years ago, two Dominican Fathers of the Province of St. Albert the Great named Dempsey and Lawton left the comforts of home, waved goodbye to their students at Fenwick High School, bid farewell to their brothers at the Priory in Oak Park, Illinois, and set off for Nigeria. While at one time teachers and preachers, they were now missionaries; the first Dominican missionaries to this African land, called to serve there by the Holy Father. This first step into the unknown by these faith-filled men of the Province, one of whom would later become bishop, became the passion and life of many Dominicans who would follow. Friars of the Province joined indigenous people of Nigeria to create a formidable team of preachers, transforming lives in a place where such transformation would be, and still is, very difficult. Indeed, a new Province was born of their efforts. This missionary zeal continues today south of our border in Bolivia where Dominicans of the Province of St. Albert the Great have again inspired locals to join them as they bring the Good News to a beautiful, loving people in a very difficult place. Small mountain towns accessible only by treacherous roads are no match for the Gospel and the men who preach it. Poverty is only a word to people overjoyed by the Word of God brought to them by these itinerant preachers, some of whom they now recognize as their own neighbors. Today, the Dominicans in Bolivia have a full postulancy, a novitiate in Peru, and a priory full of student brothers preparing for ordination to priesthood.
  • Gifts to the SDMS sustain this effort begun nearly 60 years ago by selfless men of the Dominican Province of St. Albert the Great.
  • Gifts to the SDMS pave a road to faithfulness and hope among people starved for these very things.
  • Gifts to the SDMS allow Dominicans to preach the Word to women and men thrilled by the very sound of it.
  • Gifts to the SDMS transform lives of people whom you will likely never meet but who will forever be bound to you in faithfulness and love.
  • Gifts to the SDMS provide invaluable assistance to local men who have begun their studies as Dominicans.
  • Gifts to the SDMS provide support to Dominican missionaries who, like Lawton and Dempsey before them, give up what they know to serve the unknown.
  • Gifts to the SDMS provides food for the poor we serve, hope for the desperate we encounter, and joy to those who hear of the Love Word of God perhaps for the very first time.
In short, your gift to the SDMS brings faith, hope and love to a far-away people who shall forever be indebted to you for your help.
